Melville is a hamlet and census-designated place in the town of Huntington in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, 14,533 people resided there.Location

Melville is located roughly half way between Manhattan and The Hamptons on Long Island, directly east of the county boundary with Nassau County, New York. The Long Island Expressway (LIE) and Northern State Parkway, two of the country's busiest highways and major points of entry in and out of New York City, pass through Melville. Melville is located immediately off of Exit 49 of the LIE. The New York State Route 110 runs through the center of Melville.

Melville is an affluent location, with median family income of nearly $100,000 per year, according to 2000 census statistics.

Industry

Melville is home to the U.S. headquarters of several national and international corporations, including American Home Mortgage, Arrow Electronics, Chyron, Gentiva Health Services, Nikon Corporation, the Italian-food chain Sbarro, the medical and dental supply distributor Henry Schein, global staffing giant Adecco (US Headquarters), and the cosmetics firm, Clinique. In addition, significant operations of Manhattan-based, Estee Lauder are conducted there. These headquarters and many other corporate and industrial centers are found on or near Route 110, which runs north to south through Huntington, Melville, and Amityville.

Media

The Long Island newspaper Newsday is published in the town.

The independent UHF television station WLNY, broadcasts from Melville.

History and characteristics

The hamlet's former name, Sweet Hollow, was replaced by Melville in school records in 1854. The name Melville was selected in honor of Herman Melville.

Long Island's tallest point is Jayne's Hill near Melville, with an elevation of 400.9 feet (122.2 m) above sea level.

Geography

Melville is located at 40°47′30″N, 73°24′20″W (40.791593, -73.405439)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 29.3 km² (11.3 mi²), none of which is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 14,533 people, 4,930 households, and 3,993 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 495.7/km² (1,284.0/mi²). There were 5,141 housing units at an average density of 175.3/km² (454.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 89.93% White, 2.06% Black, 0.03% Native American, 5.42% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.04% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.72% of the population.

There were 4,930 households out of which 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.2% were married couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.0% were non-families. 15.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.23.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.9 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $92,527, and the median income for a family was $99,881. Males had a median income of $70,972 versus $43,495 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $41,053. About 3.0% of families and 4.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 3.2% of those age 65 or over.
